Psychiatrist (Medical Director)

The Physicians who diagnose, treat, and help prevent diagnose, treat, and help prevent disorders of the mind. They assess and treat mental illnesses through a combination of psychotherapy, psychoanalysis, hospitalization, and medication.

Responsibilities

• Prescribe, direct, or administer psychotherapeutic treatments or medications to treat mental, emotional, or behavioral disorders.
• Analyze and evaluate patient data or test findings to diagnose the nature or extent of mental disorders.
• Collaborate with physicians, psychologists, social workers, psychiatric nurses, or other professionals to discuss treatment plans and progress.
• Design individualized care plans, using a variety of treatments.
• Gather and maintain patient information and records, including social or medical history obtained from patients, relatives, or other professionals.
• Counsel outpatients or other patients during office visits.
• Examine or conduct laboratory or diagnostic tests on patients to provide information on general physical conditions or mental disorders.
• Advise or inform guardians, relatives, or significant others of patients’ conditions or treatment.
• Teach, take continuing education classes, attend conferences or seminars, or conduct research and publish findings to increase understanding of mental, emotional, or behavioral states or disorders.
• Review and evaluate treatment procedures and outcomes of other psychiatrists or medical professionals.
• Prepare and submit case reports or summaries to government or mental health agencies.
• Serve on committees to promote or maintain community mental health services or delivery systems.

Qaulifications

• Four (4) years of undergraduate school, four (4) years of medical school, and three (3) to eight (8) years of internship and residency, depending on the specialty selected. A few medical schools offer combined undergraduate and medical school programs that last six (6) rather than the customary eight (8) years.
• Possess the amount of training and/or a degree from an accredited school of medicine. This usually requires four (4) years of pre-med and four (4) years of medical school.
• Complete an accredited program in psychiatry.
• Pass a national exam.
• Apply for licensure in the state you wish to practice in.
• Premedical students must complete undergraduate work in physics, biology, mathematics, English, and inorganic chemistry. Students also take courses in the humanities and the social sciences. Some students volunteer at local hospitals or clinics to gain practical experience in the health professions.

ADDITIONAL QUALIFICATIONS: Participate in any agency-required training. Must be free of the communicable disease of tuberculosis and agree to an initial PPD testing.
